What would my day be like without that delicious extra large cup of Dunkin Donuts coffee with sugar and cream? I can still smell that infamous aroma!
When I first started with my weight loss efforts, my addiction to coffee was keeping me from my weight loss goals.
It's not the coffee itself that's bad, but it's what you put in it, and how much you drink that can affect not just weight loss, but with several other health concerns.
Here's what you do...
Don't put this in your cup of java:
- Sugar (This should be a no brainer)
- Cream (Regular cream, including whole milk)
- Try honey instead: (1 Tsp. for the average size cup instead of sugar.)
- Try cinnamon instead: (Add 1/2 Tsp. of cinnamon instead of sugar. Cinnamon will give it flavor and will help in removing the bitterness of plain black coffee)
- Try Skim or soy milk instead
- I recommend to not drink more than 1 cup a day.
Also, what's the one thing that pops in your mind that goes perfect with coffee? Was it a donut, a pastry, coffee cake? You see where I'm going with this? Make sure you do not develop bad eating habits associated with drinking coffee......or anything else for that matter!
So, you don't have to give up coffee (phew!), but just limit how much you drink, don't develop bad eating habits with coffee, and do away with sugar and creams.

Your article is great. I have been a coffee drinker for fifty years. It is the most welcomed thing in the morning from A-roma to Z-estful quick start. Although I have always been a semi-urbanite, close-to nature, proponent of healthy living and the five food groups along with hard work and play. There are some things worth waking up for and for those long commutes before daylight. It has always been a staple social drink among southerners for centuries. Historically long lived and vivacious folk unless you are the lazy, kick back type. When nothing else will do, I'll have coffee and an accompanyment and you might as well get your moneys worth when you concoct your favorite cup of brew to your taste within reason. However, I totally disagree with the unfounded assumption that among the benefits of actual and natural coffee, that it is addicting unless you make it so like all things. I have no health problems, no medications, my pure blood type is in demand and am always regular. This before the flood of "expert advice" that inundates us today. People are just not on top of their health and well being. They give it little thought. Every little thing is too much trouble or overwhelming when you are negative and can't put one foot in front of the other on demand. A strange thing with me is that it will make me sleepy at times and relaxes me. I could never figure that out compared to others who use it as an energy drink. Oh well, once in the morning does it. And it is good to not have it at times. But it is better than subtly flavored hot water called tea.
Why not use Splenda, Equal orother no-cal sweetener.
One tablespoon of half and half is only 20 calories. ron.
Hey Ron,
Check out my article about artificial sweeteners....
Are Artificial Sweeteners Bad For You?
Hi Flash 1,
From my perspective, hot tea (regular or decaf) is my beverage of choice---some of us really love and thoroughly enjoy a cup of tea--it doesn't remind me of flavored water in the least. I have nothing negative to say about coffee; my dh drinks it, but can't understand the last sentence of your posting. It is ALL good and just goes with personal preferences.
If you want a drink with a little caffeine kick that WILL HELP, not hinder, your weight loss efforts then Green Tea is the way to go.
Green Tea's full potential has yet to be tapped.
